UEA 2nds 0 – 2 Falcons (2/11/2011)

A report on the match from Falcons captain, Kalil Rouse.

We came into this game sitting in 3rd place in the league on 2 points behind UEA and ARU (both on 6 points from two games). For our purposes, this was a match that we had to win. We were able to field our strongest line-up of the season so far and all the lads were raring to go. The first half display was superb. In attack we moved the ball well, found the strikers’ feet, spread the play and really made UEA work to try and get the ball back. In defence against a talented UEA team, we were very well organised and benefited from a lot of communication. We deservedly went into the lead after the windy conditions guided a corner-kick to the back post and a clever pass back across the goal allowed Mike Smith to tap in from a yard out. We went into half-time 1-0 up and with very little to improve upon. The second half required a different type of performance. UEA pushed three up-front as they went in search of a goal. But, yet again, the team stayed remarkably solid and organised in defence and looked dangerous on every counter-attack. Eventually, after managing to stay on the front foot for a while, Zac Baynham-Herd was sent through to a one-on-one with their goalkeeper. He cleverly jinked round him and finished into an open net. It was time to ‘park the bus’ and we did so with aplomb. Keeping our first clean sheet of the competitive season capped off a wonderful all-round performance. It’s onwards and upwards from here.

Leicester 2nds 3 - 3 Falcons (26/10/2011)

A report on the match from Falcons captain, Kalil Rouse.

We made a very strong start to the game – keeping possession well and battling admirably against a physical Leicester side. With momentum on our side, Alex Gandhi bulldozed his way through four of their players on the edge of the box, popped up in a one-on-one with the keeper and finished well to make it 1-0. Leicester came back strongly. There was a considerably long spell where we were on the back foot but were able to stay organised and keep them out. Unluckily, after two or three failed attempts at heading the ball away to safety, their midfielder produced a wonderful volley from the edge of the box that rocketed into the top corner. There was nothing our keeper could have done about it. The game became a lot less free-flowing after that with both sides failing to keep possession for long periods of time. It took an equally impressive strike from James Eales to put us back ahead. The winger jinked down the right wing, cut in onto his left foot and curled the ball into the top corner from about 25 yards out. Unfortunately for us and our yellow carded goalkeeper, it took very questionable use of the advantage rule to grant Leicester a penalty decision and allow them to draw level at 2-2. We battled well after that and Jamie Innes found space on the left wing to unleash a low shot from 25 yards out that rocketed into the bottom corner. We were 3-2 up and looking like we were going to get the win. But luck wasn’t on our side after a cross deflected off Mike Smith’s knee and into our own net to make it 3-3 at full time. Disappointing end to a decent game.

Falcons 3 - 3 Northampton 2nds (19/10/2011)

A report on the match from Falcons captain, Kalil Rouse.

After a disjointed start, we went 1-0 down quite early on in the first half. We were looking dangerous on the counter-attack, but were unable to put together any prolonged periods of possession. Finally, a jinking run from the middle of the pitch saw Dan Forde bring it back to 1-1 at half time. After a much better start to the second half, we were on the front foot but conceded a sloppy goal from the corner to make it 2-1 to Northampton – undeserved. We regained parity after a wonderful spin and strike from the edge of the area by Dan Forde and were pushing on for the win. We went ahead for the first time in the match around the 80 minutes mark after a perfectly weighted through ball and cool finish from Chris Maxwell. But, to everyone’s disappointment, a lack of concentration and communication between the midfield and defence allowed their striker to tap the ball in at the back post. We had the chance to win it right at the end, but their keeper made a good save. Overall, after hitting the post three times, we probably deserved to win, but only by the smallest of margins. We showed great mental strength and drive to come back twice from being a goal down. Not a bad first competitive performance.
